The Donut Shoppe is closing. But it’s Monday.
The woman we call Minnie
isn’t coming to unlock the door with sticky hands,
Her husband is sick.
We pay with rainbow stickers and our favorite books.
There will be no blackberry
jammed into my mouth,
No sugar shock before school
and shelter in place.
The sinkhole in the parking lot is a gasp.
The donut shop outside of
MD Anderson Hospital closes too.
Donuts Plus.
The man there invented a blueberry banana muffin.
Don’t tell me you like it here until you’ve tried one.
We pay him in cash, but he gives us a discount if we tell a joke.
Failing fledgling dream of the Florida synapse
(snap out of it!)
Forking over your cash without gracing our donut shops
Our bakeries,
The envy! To know sun!
To know our Minnie!
But this is a home constructed to be misconstrued
Sick and sticky, blueberry and banana,
Spat out and gobbled in a fantasy land of carbs.

La Donut Shoppe cierra. Pero es lunes.
La mujer a la que llamamos Minnie
no viene a abrir la puerta con manos pringosas,
su marido está enfermo.
Pagamos con pegatinas arcoiris y nuestros libros favoritos.
No habrá moras
atascadas en mi boca,
No habrá subidón de azúcar antes del cole
sino protocolo antiterrorista.
El sumidero en el parking es un grito ahogado.
La tienda de donuts afuera del
Hospital Doctor Anderson cierra también.
Donuts Plus.
El hombre de ese lugar inventó un muffin de plátano y arándano.
No me digas que te gusta esto hasta que hayas probado uno.
Pagamos en metálico, pero nos hace descuento si le contamos un chiste.
Frustrado sueño incipiente de la sinapsis de Florida
(¡despierta!)
Desembolsando vuestro dinero sin honrar nuestras tiendas de donuts
Nuestras panaderías,
¡La envidia! ¡Conocer el sol y las palmeras!
¡Conocer a nuestra Minnie!
Pero esta es una casa construida para ser malinterpretada
Enferma y pegajosa, arándano y plátano,
Escupida y engullida en una fantástica tierra de carbohidratos.
